The problem
Everyone tells you to document everything. But where are you supposed to put it?
Most people already have plenty of documentation. It's just scattered everywhere:
- Screenshots in your camera roll
- Text messages
- Emails
- Notes to yourself
- School records
- Medical records
- Calendar entries
- Missed or denied contact
- Schedule problems
- Things you need to remember later
The problem usually isn't that people aren't documenting. It's that their documentation becomes scattered, inconsistent, and difficult to organize — which makes it hard to use when you actually need it.
Organized records mean less attorney time spent sorting through screenshots and scattered messages — and often a lower bill.
Why I built this
I built this because I needed it too.
I'm a divorced mom and a founder, and I've experienced firsthand how overwhelming it can be to keep track of communications, schedules, incidents, evidence, and everything else that accumulates during a family-law situation.
I kept hearing the same advice: "Document everything."
But I kept asking the same question: Okay. But how?
Burden of Proof started as something I built for myself and a friend. I realized pretty quickly that other people were trying to solve the exact same problem. So I decided to make the system available to them, too.

The solution
Document it when it happens. Organize it later.
Burden of Proof gives that process one simple path:
- Something happens
- Open Burden of Proof
- Tap New Entry
- Record the facts
- Attach evidence, if applicable
- Save
You don't have to decide where the information goes. The system organizes it for you.
Once it's saved, it's automatically placed into the Timeline, the Evidence Index, and the Documentation Categories it relates to — nothing needs to be copied by hand or filed twice.
Two ways to use it
Use Burden of Proof wherever you are.
One purchase. Two ways to work — capture on the go, review and maintain the full record at your desk.

What you can document
Built for many kinds of family-law documentation
This system may be useful for people who have been asked to maintain documentation related to:
- Parenting & time-sharing
- Communication with the other parent
- School & education
- Medical/health matters
- Transportation & exchanges
- Schedule issues
- Communication restrictions
- Missed or denied contact
- Child statements or requests
- Agreements & orders
- Financial/logistical issues
- Important events or incidents
- Positive cooperation
Not every user will need every category — the system is built to flex to your situation.
Evidence
Keep the event connected to the evidence.
Every entry lets you identify whether evidence exists, and record the evidence type and location alongside the facts.
- Mark whether evidence exists — Yes, No, or Unknown
- Record the evidence type and where it's kept
- Attach photos or screenshots directly in the mobile version
- Every evidenced entry appears automatically in the Evidence Index
Burden of Proof does not determine what evidence is legally relevant, sufficient, or admissible in a particular case.
Child expenses
Keep child-related expenses organized in the same place as your documentation.
Assign an expense to a child, record the basics, and Burden of Proof keeps track of what's been paid, what's expected back, and what's still outstanding.
- Assign each expense to a specific child
- Record the category, date, and amount
- Track who paid and whether it's a shared expense
- Compare what's expected from the other parent to what's actually been received — Outstanding, Partial, or Reimbursed at a glance
- Add notes and attach a supporting photo
- Filter by child, category, payer, shared status, reimbursement status, and date
See the bigger picture at a glance.
A simple dashboard summarizes:
- Total Paid by Me
- Total Paid by Other Parent
- Total Received / Reimbursed
- Currently Outstanding
When you're tracking more than one child, expenses can also be viewed by child.
Burden of Proof records the information you provide. It does not determine legal responsibility or interpret your custody order.
Custody schedule & court order
Track what's ordered, what's scheduled, and what actually happened.
Most documentation tools only capture one layer — what you write down. Burden of Proof keeps three layers side by side: what your court order says, what your calendar reflects day to day, and what you actually documented.
- Set up your custody calendar — alternating weeks, 2-2-3, weekdays with alternating weekends, or day by day
- Record the schedule from your actual court order or parenting plan, separately from your day-to-day calendar
- Capture key provisions — holiday schedule, exchange location, transportation, communication, and reimbursement terms
- A real calendar, color-coded by parent, that you can correct on any day for swaps, holidays, or changes
- New entries automatically show whose day it was — no need to look it up
- Note when a day didn't go as scheduled, and record who actually had the child
- Tag entries by exchange-related incident type — late drop-off, late pickup, missed exchange, phone call not answered, denied parenting time, and more
- Attach a reference photo of your court order or parenting plan
See it side by side.
The Variance report lines up, for every documented entry:
- Ordered
- Scheduled
- Actual
- Difference
- Related Documentation
- Evidence
- Incident Type
- Notes
Burden of Proof records the information you provide. It does not determine legal responsibility, interpret your custody order, or decide whether a difference is a violation. Consult your attorney about how any difference may be relevant to your situation.
Privacy & storage
Your documentation is stored locally on your device.
The mobile version is built around local storage, not a cloud account:
- No account or sign-up required
- Entries are stored locally on your device or browser
- Photos and screenshots are stored locally, too
- Nothing is uploaded to a cloud database by this tool
This keeps your documentation private, but it also means it's on you to keep a copy: export regularly to PDF, Excel, or CSV to back up your record. Clearing your browser or site data will remove entries that haven't been exported.

Questions
Frequently asked
Do I get both the mobile version and the Excel workbook?
Yes. Your one-time $19.99 purchase includes both the mobile version and the full Excel workbook — there's nothing extra to buy.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a documentation and organization system. It does not provide legal advice or determine what evidence is legally sufficient.
Do I need to know what information is legally important?
No. Burden of Proof is designed to help you record factual information and organize it. Your attorney can determine what is legally relevant to your particular matter.
Do I have to enter the same information in multiple places?
No. In both the mobile version and the Excel workbook, you enter each event once and it's automatically organized into the related views.
Do I enter the Log ID myself?
No. Log IDs are assigned automatically, in both the mobile version and the Excel workbook.
Will my documentation be uploaded anywhere?
No. In the mobile version, your entries and any attached photos are stored locally on your device and are not uploaded to a cloud database by this tool. Export regularly to keep your own backup.
Does Burden of Proof determine what I'm owed for child expenses?
No. You record what was paid, whether it was shared, and what's been received. Burden of Proof records the information you provide — it does not determine legal responsibility or interpret your custody order.
Does the Variance report tell me if the other parent violated the order?
No. The Variance report shows differences between what your court order specifies, what your calendar reflects, and what you documented as actually happening. It's an organizational comparison only — it does not determine a legal violation, assign fault, or provide legal advice. Consult your attorney about how any difference may be relevant to your situation.
What type of evidence can I track?
You can track things such as texts, emails, call records, school records, medical records, photos, videos, documents, receipts, calendars, and other supporting information.
Can I use this for relocation?
Yes. Relocation is one possible family-law use case, but the system is designed to be useful for many types of family-law documentation.
What do future updates include?
Future updates may include improvements to formulas, Excel compatibility, the mobile version, instructions, examples, usability, documentation categories, and other improvements to the Burden of Proof product. Major new products, substantially different software products, specialized editions, or individualized services may be offered separately.
